River & Bean is changing shape.
Dry Bar evenings, good coffee, private hire and useful gatherings in Ayr.
Right now
Dry Bar after six. 25 September–4 October, 6pm–midnight, except Monday 28 September evening. Every Friday and Saturday thereafter, from 9–10 October.
Daytime private hire. By arrangement throughout the grand opening. Online daytime and evening hire booking opens 11 October. Monday daytime available; Monday evenings closed. Events TBC.
Deliveries. Tuesday–Sunday evenings when open.
River & Bean is a private basement cafe space on Old Bridge Street in Ayr, available by booking for meetings, small events, fundraising, support sessions, quiet work, planning days, training, creative use, organisation days and practical for-good projects.
We are not currently open daily for public coworking or drop-in cafe use. After our Humble Opening, we learned quickly that the original membership-led model needs more reliable support, staffing, access control and partner involvement before it can work safely and sustainably.
Now we are adding Dry Bar evenings to private hire, coffee deliveries and practical partner use.
If you need a calm, private, flexible space, we want to hear from you.
Where things stand
The Dry Bar launches Friday 25 September–Sunday 4 October 2026, 6pm–midnight, except Monday 28 September evening, when the Dry Bar is closed. That is nine evenings to come in, catch up and find your new favourite drink.
Then the public Dry Bar opens every Friday and Saturday, 6pm–midnight, starting 9–10 October. Private hire and events are available at other times by arrangement. Monday nights are closed every week.
Evening deliveries continue Tuesday–Sunday, including nights when the public Dry Bar is not open. No deliveries on Monday nights or other announced closures. Email to discuss your order, delivery area and timing.
We are not a daily daytime drop-in cafe or regular coworking venue. Outside published Dry Bar hours, please arrange your visit with us.
The current venue can continue only while private bookings, organisation use, coffee sales, subscriptions, fundraising products and supporter memberships cover its real costs.
We want to keep the space available when we are not using it. We do not want to turn every cup and booking into a maximum-profit extraction exercise just to justify the location. But the venue still has to cover real costs, because rent has a famously poor sense of poetry.
Grand opening and private hire
Daytime private hire is available by arrangement throughout our grand opening, 25 September–4 October, including Monday daytime. Events are TBC. Online booking for daytime and evening private hire opens on 11 October 2026, subject to availability. Monday evenings remain closed for now; Monday daytime stays available to book. Until online booking opens, email us to arrange hire.
What You Can Book Now
Private hire
Book River & Bean for meetings, workshops, planning days, training, creative sessions, small private events, fundraising, quiet group workspace or practical organisation use.
Standard hire is £100 for 3 hours or £175 for 6 hours. Weekend and event hire is £150 for 3 hours or £250 for 6 hours.
Every standard booking includes two jugs of filter coffee, one caffeinated and one decaf, plus a small selection of teas and instant coffee.
External catering is welcome, and we can help arrange local catering where useful.
Base of Operations bookings
Planning a group trip, club day, seaside visit, volunteer day, youth group visit, support outing or organisation away-day in Ayr?
River & Bean can act as a private base of operations: somewhere to gather, leave bags, make drinks, regroup, decompress, use facilities, charge phones and avoid trying to coordinate human beings in the wild like some kind of punishment exercise.
Organisation and for-good use
We offer daytime, evening, weekend and multi-day bookings for charities, clubs, community groups, social enterprises, support organisations, campaign groups and for-good projects.
For charities, community groups and members, we can talk through supported pricing, regular-use arrangements, fundraising and drinks-service options. The right route depends on how you will use the space.
Ticketed events, merch and fundraisers
Got an event, fundraiser or workshop in mind? If it suits the space and we agree the setup, we can plan a route for tickets, merch, drinks or fundraising products.
That means a charity, club, small business or project may be able to run a fundraiser, workshop, talk, launch, exhibition extension or ticketed session where sales help cover the hire cost and raise money at the same time.
You run the event; we provide the venue and whatever sales support we have agreed. It is not free money, because apparently those remain illegal under the laws of physics, but it can turn "we need to find a venue" into "we have a room and a workable plan".
The Clever Bit: Meetings Plus Fundraisers
For charities, clubs and organisations, River & Bean can be more than occasional venue hire.
A suitable subscription or membership route could cover regular committee meetings, planning sessions or club use, while giving the same organisation a practical place to run quarterly fundraisers, ticketed talks, workshops, merch sales or drinks-supported events.
If a quarterly fundraiser sells well, it may cover or reduce the cost of the space used for the meetings around it. For some groups, that could be simpler and cheaper than constantly haggling over venues, juggling Zoom fatigue, and pretending "can everyone hear me?" is a governance model.
What We Still Believe
River & Bean was built around a simple idea: some people need calm, private, flexible space more than they need another loud cafe with clattering cups and sixteen people pretending a laptop makes them a tech founder.
We still want to serve people whose hours, needs, work, health, caring responsibilities or circumstances do not fit the usual pattern.
That includes:
- charities and local organisations needing affordable space
- support groups needing somewhere calm and private
- carers and disabled people who need predictable environments
- neurodivergent adults who need low-pressure space
- microbusinesses and freelancers needing occasional facilities
- clubs, groups and community projects that need a base
- people who need somewhere to be, but not necessarily somewhere to perform being fine
The aim has not changed. The way we keep it going has.
Why the Change?
The Humble Opening was useful, but humbling.
We do not currently have the daytime coworking subscribers needed to justify daily staffing and travel. The original Dry Bar partnership fell through outside our control; the new evening programme is a fresh, practical start.
Public-access solo working in a private basement cafe space is not something we are comfortable offering casually, especially in the evenings. Access control, staffing, safeguarding, insurance, accessibility improvements, stock and utilities all cost real money. Annoyingly, nobody has yet accepted "but the vibe is excellent" as legal tender.
Rather than pretend, we are being direct:
River & Bean needs paid bookings, practical partners, organisation use, supporter subscriptions, fundraising routes and coffee sales to keep going.
Use It, Shape It, or We May Lose It
This is not a guilt trip dressed as a website. It is the current reality.
If the space is used, it can stay shared, flexible and useful. If it is not used enough, the sensible options become less lovely: lease it long-term to one party, let it go, or shrink River & Bean into a smaller kitchen-led model focused on Happy Coo, online sales, subscriptions, partnerships and charity-share programmes.
We would rather keep the Old Bridge Street space available when we are not using it.
That only works if enough people, groups and organisations use it properly.
Help Us Build the Next Version
We are looking for:
- organisations that need private space
- charities and community groups needing fundraising opportunities
- partners who can help run sessions, coworking blocks or support evenings
- professionals who can advise on structure, funding, governance, accessibility and direction
- supporters who want the idea to survive long enough to become useful
- people interested in a future CIC, charitable company or other appropriate structure
We are especially interested in partner-led sessions that help people without turning River & Bean into an unmanageable public drop-in.
The River & Bean Fresh Ayr Fund
A minimum of 1% of every River & Bean transaction will be allocated to the River & Bean Fresh Ayr Fund.
The fund will be reviewed and disbursed quarterly, with active registered members able to vote fairly and transparently on eligible applications from for-good organisations, clubs, projects and River & Bean proposals.
River Cottage may be proposed for a disbursement, alongside other eligible applicants. It is not guaranteed special treatment just because we are fond of buildings with good timing and suspiciously useful locations.
The Fresh Ayr Fund is not currently a charity, trustee fund or independent charitable grant-maker. It is a transparent River & Bean commitment to reserve and disburse part of our trading income for common-good use.
River Cottage and the Bigger Aim
Our current basement venue is calm, private and lovely, but accessibility is difficult and potentially expensive.
We would love to acquire or operate River Cottage, directly over the bridge, because it could allow easier public events, private hire, accessibility improvements and community use, while allowing the current River & Bean venue to remain a truly private, calm space for people who need it most.
This is an ambition, not a promise.
Coffee Still Matters
We still sell good coffee. That bit, mercifully, was not the problem.
We are building around:
- takeaway coffee for passers-by when staffed or announced
- collection and delivery
- direct website orders
- River & Bean coffee selections
- supporter coffee subscriptions
- charity co-branded coffee fundraising
- Proper Coffee and Propa Cuppa drinks service
- Happy Coo Confection Co sweets and treats as fundraising products
