A business trying to keep useful things possible.

River & Bean is a private enterprise based at 13 Old Bridge Street, Ayr.

We use bookings, coffee, subscriptions and partnerships to keep useful things within reach—without pretending every good idea needs to be a charity, a luxury product or somebody's unpaid second job.

The current venue is a private basement cafe space. It can be hired for meetings, organisation use, support sessions, fundraising, quiet work, workshops, training, creative use and group days.

When the setup suits the room, organisers can also agree tickets, merch, drinks service or fundraising around their event.

What Changed After the Humble Opening

The Humble Opening did what honest experiments do: it told us the truth.

The original model depended on enough members, subscribers, staffing and partner support to justify regular opening.

That has not happened yet.

We also lost a key partner for the original dry bar model outside our control. That experience, and the lack of enough daytime coworking members, taught us not to present River & Bean as a daily-access coworking cafe.

The current model combines private bookings, partnerships, coffee sales and Dry Bar evenings. The Dry Bar launches 25 September–4 October 2026, 6pm–midnight, except Monday 28 September evening when the Dry Bar is closed. From 9 October, public Dry Bar evenings are every Friday and Saturday, 6pm–midnight.

Evening deliveries continue Tuesday–Sunday, including nights without public Dry Bar opening. There are no deliveries on Monday nights or other announced closures. Private hire and events are available at other times by arrangement; Monday nights are closed every week.

What We Are Trying to Do, Honestly

We want to meet real needs without making promises the room, staffing or budget cannot safely keep.

River & Bean is not currently a charity. We are exploring whether a CIC, charitable company or other structure could help deliver the mission properly.

For now, the principles are:

• be honest about what is available
• keep the space calm and controlled
• prioritise useful community and organisation use
• publish how Fresh Ayr Fund contributions work
• allow active registered members to vote quarterly on eligible Fresh Ayr Fund disbursements
• work with partners rather than pretending we can do everything alone
• avoid promising support we cannot safely deliver

Who We Want to Serve

River & Bean is especially interested in supporting:

• charities and for-good organisations
• carers and disabled people needing predictable environments
• neurodivergent adults needing calm space
• microbusinesses and sole traders
• people with irregular work patterns
• groups who need private, flexible space
• support organisations
• people rebuilding routine, confidence or momentum
• fledgling companies and projects that need a practical base

Accessibility

The current River & Bean venue is a basement space and is not step-free.

That limits who we can welcome safely and comfortably. We do not like that. We are also not going to pretend the stairs disappear because the website uses warm language.

If anyone attending has mobility, access, sensory or support needs, please contact us before booking. We will be direct about what the current venue can and cannot support.

River Cottage

We would love to acquire or operate River Cottage, directly over the bridge.

River Cottage could allow easier public events, private hire, accessible community sessions and partner-led programmes, while letting the current River & Bean basement remain a private, calm, low-pressure space for those who need that sort of environment most.

River Cottage is an ambition, not a guarantee.

River Cottage may be proposed for a River & Bean Fresh Ayr Fund disbursement alongside other eligible for-good organisations, clubs and projects. It will not receive an automatic entitlement simply because it fits the dream nicely.
