The Humble Opening Was Humbling

Update, 16 September 2026: This is the story of our original change of direction. The Dry Bar now launches 25 September–4 October 2026, 6pm–midnight, except Monday 28 September evening when the Dry Bar is closed. From 9 October, it opens every Friday and Saturday, 6pm–midnight. Evening deliveries continue Tuesday–Sunday, with no deliveries on Monday nights or other announced closures. Private hire and events are available at other times by arrangement; Monday nights are closed every week.

The Humble Opening lived up to its name.

It was useful. It was hopeful. It was awkward in places. And, most importantly, it was honest.

It showed us that River & Bean still has a purpose, but that the original model cannot currently be carried by hope, unpaid labour, and the belief that if you build a lovely calm basement cafe space people will simply appear in financially useful numbers. Apparently business does not run on narrative tension. Rude.

So we are changing shape.

River & Bean was not able to open daily as a public coworking cafe. We did not have the daytime member base to justify daily travel, staffing and running costs. We also lost the partner route for our original dry bar model entirely outside our control, which meant we could not honestly sell social memberships around events we were not able to run.

Rather than pretend, we are saying it clearly.

For now, River & Bean is booking-led.

That means the space is available by booking and arrangement for private hire, organisation use, meetings, workshops, support groups, small events, training, fundraising, creative use, planning days and group visits to Ayr.

Standard private hire is £100 for 3 hours or £175 for 6 hours. Weekend and event hire is £150 for 3 hours or £250 for 6 hours. Standard hire includes two jugs of filter coffee, one caffeinated and one decaf, plus a small selection of teas and instant coffee. External catering is welcome, and we can help arrange local catering where useful.

It also means we will be building around practical trading routes that can cover real costs: private bookings, charity and organisation bookings, coffee sales, collection and delivery, direct website orders, coffee subscriptions, fundraising products, supporter memberships and partner-led sessions.

It also means approved organisers may be able to create events and sell tickets, event merch, drinks or fundraising products through the River & Bean system. They remain the organiser; we facilitate the venue, sales route and agreed support. For charities, clubs and small organisations, that can turn venue hire from a cost into a practical fundraising route.

The aim has not changed.

River & Bean was created to provide calm, private, useful space for people and organisations who are often underserved by normal venues, normal hours and normal assumptions.

We still want to support charities, clubs, for-good projects, carers, disabled people, neurodivergent adults, sole traders, microbusinesses, people rebuilding their lives, and those whose needs do not fit neatly into the world's favourite myth: Monday to Friday, nine to five, everything is fine.

But we have to build that sustainably.

The current venue is a private basement cafe space. It is calm, flexible and genuinely lovely. It is also not step-free, not cheap to run, and not something we can casually open for public-access solo working every day, especially in the evenings. Access control, staffing, safeguarding, accessibility improvements, utilities, stock and travel all cost money. So does heat. Shocking discoveries, all.

For the current venue to continue, its costs need to be covered by reliable bookings, sales, subscriptions, supporters and partners.

That is the line.

If the space is used, it can stay shared, flexible and useful. If it is not used enough, the sensible options become less lovely: lease it long-term to one party, let it go, or shrink River & Bean into a smaller kitchen-led model focused on Happy Coo, online sales, subscriptions, partnerships and charity-share programmes.

We would rather keep the Old Bridge Street space available when we are not using it.

That only works if enough people, groups and organisations use it properly.

We would love to reach the point where River & Bean can offer supported employment and work experience sessions, support groups, training and learning sessions, partner-led programmes, quiet coworking access, and genuinely useful community space subsidised by bookings and sales.

We would also love to acquire or operate River Cottage, directly over the bridge. River Cottage could give us a more accessible route for public events, private hire and community use, while allowing the current basement space to remain a private, calm environment for people who need that sort of space most.

That is an ambition, not a promise.

To make the next stage transparent, a minimum of 1% of every River & Bean transaction will be allocated to the River & Bean Fresh Ayr Fund.

The Fresh Ayr Fund will be reviewed and disbursed quarterly, with active registered members able to vote fairly and transparently on eligible applications from for-good organisations, clubs, projects and River & Bean proposals. River Cottage may be proposed for a disbursement alongside other eligible applicants.

The Fresh Ayr Fund is not currently a charity, trustee fund or independent charitable grant-maker. It is a transparent River & Bean commitment to reserve and disburse part of our trading income for common-good use.

We are inviting practical help.

We want to hear from charities, clubs, community groups, support organisations, social enterprises, funders, local professionals, governance brains, accessibility experts, and people who can help us decide whether a CIC, charitable company or other structure is the right route.

We are interested in trusted organisation membership, where approved organisations can train staff or volunteers in site operations so they can reduce the cost of fundraising or recurring use by staffing the facilities themselves.

We are also interested in the simple, useful model of monthly meetings plus quarterly fundraisers: a charity, club or member organisation uses River & Bean as a predictable meeting base, then runs a ticketed talk, workshop, fundraiser, exhibition extension or product event that may cover or reduce the cost of the space.

We are interested in partner-led support sessions, including I Ken: a proposed weekly or fortnightly mental-health-friendly evening where people can come and chat, or not chat, listen occasionally, sit quietly, and be understood without pressure. I Ken would not be therapy, crisis support, counselling or clinical care.

We are interested in fundraising partnerships using River & Bean coffee, Proper Coffee, Propa Cuppa and Happy Coo Confection Co sweets and treats, with transparent support for partner organisations and the option for customers to redirect support to the Fresh Ayr Fund.

Most of all, we are interested in useful reality.

Not because the dream is dead.

Because the dream deserves better than being slowly murdered by pretending.
